WHITE PLAGUE:

THESIS PRESENTED APRIL 15 AND 16 2021 AT THE CAROUSEL THEATRE AT THE UNIVERSITY OF TENNESSEE KNOXVILLE

In a world with a global war afoot, a virus emerges that is guaranteed to infect and kill those over the age of 45. Doctors scurry to meet the demands of scared citizens wanting more information, when Galen-a doctor from a poor district- arrives at a hospital with a cure in hand. The catch? He will only use his cure on those who are not financially supporting the war.

White Plague written by Karel Capek eighty years ago, bares eerie similarities to our current pandemic and the various reactions to our situation by those in power and those on the streets.

After spending a Summer in quarantine and longing for connection I began to consider where my thesis might take me. I decided to explore representing this play on a non-traditional format: small hats. After a course in Millinery in my second year of graduate school, and an introduction to small scale lighting devices I began to experiment with the integration of lighting into dioramic hats. This is the product of a year of preparation and build.

*Note: Hat #4 is still in process.
